Apizza Legend of New Haven

Grand Apizza founder Frederick Nuzzo, a WWII fighter pilot, began his pizza-making journey in 1948. He got his start working for his brother Nicholas, who owned Modern Apizza in New Haven, CT. After nearly a decade of learning and perfecting his craft, Fred opened the doors to his own pizzeria, Grand Apizza, in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven in 1955.
Fred and his wife, Rosemarie Nuzzo, ran the original Grand Apizza on Grand Avenue for 50 years. They built a loyal customer base through word of mouth. The pizzeria quickly became a beloved gathering place in the community. Fred was known as the “go-to guy” generous and supportive of local schools, churches, and Little League teams. A humble man, Fred never boasted about much… except his children, and the fact that he worked nearly every day until he was over 75.

Today, Fred’s son Michael Nuzzo proudly carries on his father’s legacy. He owns and operates three thriving Grand Apizza locations in Clinton, Madison, and Guilford, Connecticut. Now, Michael’s wife, two sons, and daughter are working alongside him, just as Fred once taught Michael.
From 50 cents for a small pizza in 1955 to three generations of pizza-making, the Nuzzo family is proud to celebrate over 70 years in business.
